Durham County Council are carrying out repairs to the 130 year old Causeway Bridge over the River Wear. The first stage of these works started on Tuesday 6th May and will last for about three weeks whilst scaffolding is erected around the bridge.

The road over the bridge will be closed during this time, meaning that there will be no vehicle access to Wolsingham Railway Station from the town. The bridge remains open for pedestrian access only and there will be a road diversion via Hamsterley and Wear's Bank for the duration of the first closure.

If you intend to drive and park at Wolsingham Station to use our services, please allow extra time for the diversion or consider using one of our other stations such as Frosterley, which is three miles away and has parking available.

Subsequent work will use traffic management with lights and a width restriction of 3.25 metres. There will be two further closures with dates to be announced in due course.

The whole restoration project is due to be completed in early 2026.
