As mentioned in a previous announcement, it was the intention to operate a limited service in the Christmas season this year and that a final decision would be made in late October after a review of the work underway on the infrastructure and rolling stock.
Weardale Railway Limited management reports that good progress has been made (see separate news items) but it has not been possible to complete all the necessary work in the timeframe available and sadly it will not be possible to operate any trains at Christmas this year. Wayne Dixon, Operations Manager of WRL, has announced that it is hoped to complete the remedial works and reopen in February 2022
The Weardale Railway Trust was to have provided the diesel passenger train units for these services, which would have been operated by Trust volunteers. Work is ongoing in restoring the 108 Unit to fully operational condition, good progress has been made, but this too has yet to be completed. Trust Chairman, Kevin Richardson, passes on his thanks to all those Trust members who came forward to volunteer for the Christmas trains.
