The Trust has recently been made aware of the sale of a heritage 2 car 108 ‘Derby lightweight’ by its current users the Bodmin & Wentford Railway, another heritage railway. It is hoped the great response by means of pledges and donations by supporters to the Trust’s previous bid for Chilton’s 121 diesel unit can be repeated. Success with any future acquisitions will help the continued growth of Weardale Railway and the heritage services provided within the Dale.
The 108’s were introduced into BR service from 1958 onwards and saw use across most of the network, remaining in service until 1990. It was published on the Bodmin Railway Facebook page that the organisation had decided to offer the unit for sale, due to it being surplus to requirements on the railway, since the purchase of one of the Chilton 121 ‘Bubble Cars’. The heritage railcar was used in service up until September 2017 and had been repainted the previous winter in 2016.
